NGJ Presents an Indie Artist Talk: How a two and a half fine artist made a game that is actually fun to play! By Marek Plichta (Spaces of Play)

Marek Plichta

Marek Plichta will speak about the creative design process of the physical box stacking game Ordnungswissenschaft. The game was created in three days in collaboration with the fine artists Till Wittwer and Jakob Penca. They managed to blend their different interests like procedural computation, theater and game design to create a game that makes the player act like a simple machine but at the same time demands human intuition to win. Ordnungswissenschaft won the award for Best Interaction and was also nominated for Best Game Design at the IndieCade Festival. Part of the talk will also cover how to pronounce Ordnungswissenschaft properly.

Marek Plichta is a game designer and art director at Berlin based indie studio Spaces of Play. He co-designed the award winning games Spirits and Ordnungswissenschaft. He also teaches game design at the University of Applied Sciences in Potsdam, Germany and interface design at the Game Design School in Schwerin and Leipzig. Marek organized the Global Game Jam in Berlin the last years.
He loves experimental games, interactive media installations, and to eat delicious bananas on continents far away.

Nordic Game Jam 2012 Presents: The Logo Shop

You know that feeling in your stomach when your Game Jam Game finally comes together? When it gets a higher state of meaning just minutes before the final deadline when you’re high on cold coffee and lack of sleep? Yet your heart tells you that something is wrong… The Comic Sans that you’ve chosen for your game logo just doesn’t summarise the otherwise epic nature of your game.

Don’t worry, help is here. Nordic Game Jam presents The Logo Shop, the shop that makes awesome game logos for YOU! For FREE! Whether you’re looking for a logo for your ‘Barbie: Undead Nightmare’ game or the title just won’t work for you unless the letters are cut out of flaming ice, The Logo Shop is the place to go to.

The concept is simple: You come up with an awesome title for your game and The Logo Shop makes it look fantastic!

The Logo shop is a one man enterprise whose proud owner, Thomas Ryder, is a fanatic fontoholic and a vector curve wunderkind. Thomas claims to be the son of Helvetica, and is one of the few people in the world who laughs when someone tells a typography joke. He’s like a horse whisperer. But with fonts.

So get in line for a little logo love. No game is too small; no title is too weird.

Interview: The Nordic Game Jam Experience

At last year’s Nordic Game Jam a team of seven made the game Cubiclysm. We managed to interview four of them them back in February to hear about their experiences while they were still fresh in their minds. Here’s the experiences of Oliver Due Billing, Kristian Hedeholm, Sebastian Jørgensen, and Nikolaj Wendt.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Who are you? What kind of work do you normally do?

Nikolaj: I am 35 and I work as a producer for watAgame ApS in Copenhagen. We run a social networking site with social activities, games and creative content for teenage girls. Games, both digital and non-digital, has always been a big passion of mine.

Oliver: I work as a programmer at watAgame developing everything from games to backend systems. We work on an online game called goSupermodel and the challenges there are very versatile.

Sebastian: I’m a 28 year old computer scientist. I am very competition-minded when it comes to games – I used to be part of a Quake 3 clan which became the european master in Capture the Flag, and has since that played all kinds of fast-paced competitive strategic games. I work at watAgame as a programmer too.

Kristian: Normally I study computer science at Aarhus University. Besides this, I am a member of the an association called Unge Spiludviklere (Young Game Developers), where I write and holds workshops about game development. Furthermore, I am also a member of the Danish Game Council (Dansk Spilråd) which aims to promote game media in Denmark.
