The winner tune is intended to be used in the Nordic Game Jam documentary and for a promotion video. If the submissions are not of sufficient quality, we reserve the right to not choose a winner.

My mysterious meeting with Greg Costikyan

I met Greg on a rainfull day in a land far far away. We sat down and had coffee. The chat started like this…
Me: So Greg, Is it okay I just call you Greg? I Hope it’s OK… I don’t like the formalities much… Well anyway I’ve heard that you’re quit the traveler. Have you ever been to Denmark?
Greg CostikyanGreg: Yes, I was a guest of honor at Fastaval a few years ago (I’ve designed a number of well-regarded tabletop RPGs, most notably including Paranoia), and have lectured at the Copenhagen ITU on game design. Keep in mind that I worked for Nokia for a couple of years, so I’ve been to the Nordic countries a fair bit.
Me: Ah well… We’re glad to welcome you back to ITU. When did you first venture into the world of game design as a living, and what did you work on?

Greg: The first commercially published game I worked on, at least as more than a playtester, was Supercharge, a board wargame published in 1976 by SPI, as part of the North Africa Quad, a boxed set of four games about battles in North Africa during WWII that shared a common rule set, but each with its own counters, maps, and special rules. Supercharge dealt with the first and second battles of Alamein — the British attack at the second battle was called “Operation Supercharge.” As with all “quad” games, it had 34″x22″ game-map and 100 counters, and relatively simple (by wargame standards) rules. It is not, to my mind, a particularly good game; the base rules for the North Africa Quad were designed to support the sort of wide-ranging chaotic armored combat that characterized most action in North Africa, while Alamein was essentialy a set-piece assault, largely by infantry, over a narrow, fortified front — the basic game system did not work particularly well for the situation. Interview: Anders Leicht Rohde on the Game Jam Experience

In order to provide some insider insight on what participating in the Nordic Game Jam is like, we have talked with Anders Leicht Rohde, who has participated in the Nordic Game Jam for the last several years.

Anders Leicht RohdeAnders is 28 years old and is living in Aarhus, Denmark. He’s married and has a masters in multimedia and computer game design. He works as a creative director, producer and game designer at Krea Medie A/S where he is primarily working on popular Nordic childrens’ games such as Pixeline, Hugo, and Magnus & Myggen. Anders says that his work is very diverse, ranging from writing game design documents, level designing, high level designing, producing, project managing and writing manuscripts for the games.

What was your experience like when you participated in the Nordic Game Jam 2010?

In NGJ 2009 me and the same team did a game called “Make my head grow”, which we had some success with. In 2010 we wanted to do a game that was even better. Unfortunately we focused a bit too much on getting success and a bit too little on doing a great game. Continue reading ‘Interview: Anders Leicht Rohde on the Game Jam Experience’

Board Games – design without limits

As first announced in early December, Nordic Game Jam 2011 will have a Board Game Track to run in parallel with the regular Computer Game Track.

Mankind has been playing games for centuries, even in some civilizations before literacy was developed – and board games have been right there at the very start of the evolution of games.

At Nordic Game Jam 2011 you have the chance to put your mark on this gaming evolution by devoloping your own board game. Join us for three days of creative fun, where there are no rules except the rules you make. We give the participants total freedom to develop the board game that will be the next social gathering point across borders and cultures.

The creative festivitas takes place at the IT-University of Copenhagen, fromthe 28th to the 30th of January. Come and show us how the next Chess or Backgammon will look like. Or maybe a board game without a board?
