Hail the winners of Nordic Board Game Jam 2011!!

As a first-time track the Board Games at Nordic Game Jam was a fantastic mix of creativity, cool mechanics and great people. We saw games like the evil board game President Evil, the eatable Chicken Farm, the zombie-game (with glow in the dark pieces) 28 minutes later, the online/realtime/board gamish Hero Network and the really evil Merchants of Death, where the players take turns to profit from wartorn countries.

But but but – the winners of the Audience Award was:

28 Minutes Later

A tight little board game about a zombie-invasion, where the last man standing wins – but everybody dies in the end.

The Jurys Prize went to the eatable boardgame

Chicken Farm

Thanks to all the attendees, and we have already plans for a bigger, badder, better Nordic Board Game Jam in 2012.

In the meantime check out the pictures from the jam on Flickr.

Hugs – Kim, PJ and Thomas

Nordic Game Jam not IS the biggest Global Game Jam!!

Update: Nordic Game Jam is finally rightfully listed as the largest Jam Site! This is a list of all the Jam Sites ranked after number of participants:

Largest Jam Sites

However, listed with only 207 jammers, there’s still many who haven’t registered or selected Nordic Game Jam as their Jam Site yet!

Luckily it’s not too late quite yet. Follow the steps below to rectify the situation! Continue reading ‘Nordic Game Jam not IS the biggest Global Game Jam!!

SOLD OUT!!1!

We started out by having all early bird tickets snapped up in no time. Then we had a steady sale for a some time, and the last two weeks t-shirt and ticket sales picked up and we are now happy* to announce that this years jam is sold out, which means you’ll be 250 participants jamming, with around 60 speakers, organizers, runners, helpers, politicitians, beer drinkers, camera-dudes and documentary directors running around like crazy to make this the best and biggest Game Jam on our nice little planet… =)

Big hugs and kisses from the organizers for your support!

* We secretly wish for a even bigger jam…

It might be late but it’s awesome…

The program has been updated with juice details. The talks on Main and Indie track that takes place Friday afternoon has been updated with bios on the speakers and details on the content of their talks.

Among others we have a visit from Peter Vesti Frendrup, who worked on James Bond: Quantum of Solace, Dead Space: Extraction and 007: GoldenEye as level designer. The indie spirit is kept alive by a showcasing event from Swedish Cactus, Zamarkand, Martin Jonasson, die Gute Fabrik and our own Tim Garbos. On top of this Knytt creator Nicklas Nygren(Nifflas) will talk about his latest creations.

There’s also gonna be an epic showdown between Three Game Journalists, and talks touching the subjects of serious games and game research, plus some pratical advice for Windows Phone 7 Game development with XNA.

Unity Pro Licenses to Winning Team

Unity Technologies is a proud Event Sponsor of Nordic Game Jam 2011, and apart from sponsoring the event Unity will give out Unity Pro licenses to the members of the “People’s Prize” winning team!

Unity is also providing a temporary free Unity Pro with Asset Server license for all Global Game Jam participants to use, to make sure that anyone can collaborate efficiently on games with Unity during the weekend of the Game Jam! You and your team can read more and find the serial number to use here.

Worth knowing for anyone participating in a Game Jam is that Unity is uniquely suited for rapid prototyping and fast experimentation and tweaking of ideas for a game. Lots of teams in last year’s Global Game Jam made games with Unity – some of them can be seen here.

If you should have any problems or troubles getting set up with Unity during the Jam, help is never far away: It seems that half of the Danish Games industry is using Unity these days so chances are that somebody near you are familiar with it. Besides that, two of the organizers of the Nordic Game Jam 2011 happen to work for Unity in their day job (ask for Emil or Rune), and many Unity employees are participating in the event as well. If you have never touched Unity before but would be curious to try it out for the Jam, now is your chance to get a head start and get used to how everything works. Why not start off by downloading Unity for free and then checking out these basic video tutorials to get up to speed.

Happy Jamming and good luck to all!

Move over Monopoly – The Nordic Board Game Jam is in town

First, you take a bit of Ludo, then you add a bit of Trivial Pursuit, and finally you top off your creation with nuances of Monopoly, Solitaire and UNO and finish off with a LEGO die.

This could be the recipe for the next great board game success when Nordic game developers meet this weekend in the game development competition Nordic Game Jam at the IT University in Copenhagen.

Normally, only digital games are developed at Nordic Game Jam’s 48-hour competition but for the first time ever in Europe, board games have got their own track this year so people can test their creativity with board game development.

The rules are simple: design a new board game in 48 hours and present it to an expert jury and the other developers.

“Board games are very social and form the basis of all video games. It is a very pure form of game design since knowledge about graphics, programming, audio design og computer experience are required in order to “jam” a board game. It just needs good game mechanics,” says Thomas Vigild, one of the three coordinators of the Board Game track at Nordic Game Jam.

“Additionally, we have put together a broad jury that will evaluate the new board game ideas based on design, merchantability, game mechanics and appearance. We are sure that the seed for future Danish board games will be sowed this weekend at the IT University,” he adds.

Come visit and discover future board games on Sunday, January 30, 2011 at the IT University in Copenhagen. This year’s board games will be presented at 4pm, followed by a voting session.

The jury at Nordic Game Jam’s Board Game Track consists of the Nordic sales director of Bezzerwizzer Klavs Lunding-Sørensen, the Barda star Martin Rauff, associate professor at The Danish Design Academy Denis Virlogeux, Jens Hoppe from Copenhagen’s Board Games Club and the games expert Henrik Ståhlberg from the specialty store Games in Copenhagen.

CrowdSourcing the NGJ 2011 Trophy – We Want Your Knick-knacks!

As some of you may remember, last year we presented the very first Nordic Game Jam trophy to the winners of the People’s Choice vote. Creating it there on site during the jam was a labour of love. It consisted of many donated bits of technology- and game-flavoured flotsam carefully welded together with the magic of a hot-glue gun, and was more than a little bit inspired by Katamari Damacy.  A steady stream of curious participants were drawn in by it’s increasing gravitational pull on their way to recaffeinate, as the mass of objects grew ever bigger and more complex.

It was such a great experience that we wanted to do it all over again this year, and to involve you guys a whole lot sooner this time around!
